Dale did his first talk and it went very well. Last night the Cruise Director mentioned his talks after the performance and he had a great turnout. We then listened to the destination speaker about the upcoming ports and a naturalist – Brent Nixon – talk about the Northern Lights. He said that we had a very good chance to see them, but I gave up around midnight. Sure enough, apparently, they were out at 1:20am, darn. Oh yes, and the singer impressionist at the theatre was Karen Grainger for our Chic evening – she did a great job with so many different female vocalists and was very entertaining.
On our second sea day, Brent talked about whales – he is very entertaining and informative.
Dale followed him and talked about Top Gun and was again very well received. Our main theatre event was a matinee – Edge Effect (a terrific a cappella singing group) – as we were due to arrive at Prins Christian Sund, Greenland, at 4pm. Brent was on the loud speaker to talk to us about the icebergs and area. This took up the whole afternoon and evening, as we went in one passage to see the biggest glacier, and out another one on our way to Nanortalik via Aappilattoq. More about Nanortalik under these pictures.
Nanortalik – we had to tender to shore as it is such a small place, but they had a fantastic outdoor museum which comprised several buildings. Each building had a theme with all the supporting artifacts and write-ups. We learned about kayaks (the oldest one found was 4000 years old) and how they made them with driftwood and seal skins. There were lots of old photos showing how the community shared in the whale hunting. Seal hunting was big too, and the skins were used for everything. And of course fishing. Our evening entertainment was a new show by Leslie McDonel.
