So many stories to tell when we get home - too many and too long to write about! However, today we did manage to go to the Wellington Quarries and tunnels. The Maison Blanche had more carvings and more Canadian history, but the Wellington Quarries in Arras were all about the 20,000 men who spent up to 8 days living underground before being called up for battle. It also housed about 700 hospital beds. The best bunk to occupy would have been the middle one, as the top one could be very wet from all the water seeping in, and the bottom one was accessible to the rats. Horrendous living conditions, but at least the men were safe from shelling and shooting. Again, a very real picture of the horrors of war and the courage and fortitude of the men fighting for freedom. www.greatwar.co.uk/french-flanders-artois/museum-wellington-quarry.htm">http://www.greatwar.co.uk/french-flanders-artois/museum-wellington-quarry.htm Another great dinner back at the Farm House - every evening has been a party like atmosphere here, recounting the days adventures (and misadventures!). A great team.
