An overnight stay in Honolulu before catching a flight to Kauai. Our first day was just getting here and picking up groceries. We had a quick visit with the kids, then unpacked and early to bed!
We had a leisurely walk in the morning and then headed off to Hanalei Beach. It was perfect weather and we played in the sand with the kids. The waves were such that we stayed in the shallows. After a quick nap we joined the kids at the pool. The water was a bit chilly but we managed.
The next day was a repeat performance (minus the nap) except we actually went in the water!
It was a beach and shopping day. Unfortunately, the bigger stores are about 45 minutes away.
Today we were back to Hanalei Beach. It has been very mixed up weather - some clouds, some sun, some rain, but we usually get in some beach time with the kids.
Wednesday there was a Music and Art Festival at the local golf course. Not much there but it was a nice walk. We tried a different beach afterwards, Anini Beach - good and bad - it had a breakwater, so the waves were minimal, but the sand was too grainy and didn't make for good sand castles (and poor Natalie got stung by a bee).
Back to Hanalei Beach, but it was a bit chilly, so we stopped in Hanalei on the way back to our condo, to get Dale a sweater for our morning walks, then went home for lunch. After lunch it was beautiful again, so it was back to the beach.
Had a late start today, as Adam and Natalie went to the pharmacy to get something for her bee sting. I had given her the few Benadryl that I brought, but her poor arm was still very swollen and sore. Then of course, it was back to the beach!
Today was simply the best beach day. The waves were fun (not too scary), the sun was shining and the temperature was near perfect.
Darn, it didn't last!!! At least we got our walk in before the downpour. We did see the kids at the beach for a bit this afternoon before it started raining again.
Hanalei Beach was closed today because of the storm yesterday, so the kids found a little cove near Anini Beach which was nice as it was so different. There were smoothish lava rocks with tiny tide pools which housed some tiny fish that were thankfully impossible to catch. Beyond the rocks were dots of sea urchins and there was a turtle swimming near by.
Apparently one has to wait from 48-72 hours for the water to clear at Hanalei Beach, so back we went to the little cove near Anini Beach. This time Dale and Ben brought their snorkel gear and got to explore some of the coral around our little spot.
And now for something completely different - well at least a different beach. It was about a half hour drive on very winding roads and lots of one-car-only bridges. But it was worth the drive. Tunnel Beach is even bigger and longer than Hanalei and Anini put together. Plus there is a large cave/tunnel on the other side of the street, hence the name. On the way home, we also stopped at the Green Church - the stained glass is amazing.
Last night was a big storm, so the power was out for several hours during the night. All was well by morning, except for the internet was down. So, got some packing done and if it gets a bit nicer out, we will head to the pool with the kids.
