South America - Amalia Glacier, Chacabuco, Puerto Montt

Sea Day – With a great view of the Amalia Glacier and another relaxing sea day.

Chacabuco, Chile – not much here!  We did a bus tour of the Rio Simpson National Reserve with a lovely walk along the river.  Unfortunately, it was a bit wet and foggy, so the spectacular views we were hoping to see literally did not materialize.  We then toured around the town of Puerto Aysén with a stop at the ‘Cascade of the Virgin’ waterfall.  On to the 2ndlargest suspension bridge in Chile and back to the ship.

Puerto Montt, Chile – Another busy day – on to the bus to take a catamaran cruise on Lake Esmeralda in the Vincente Perez Rosales National Park.  The magnificent snow-capped Osorno volcano was unfortunately capped in cloud, but the lake and surrounding black beaches and green forests were beautiful.  Back on the bus to Petrohue Falls, which were really amazingly beautiful rapids flowing with the emerald green water from the lake.  After a traditional Chilean lunch with empanadas, vegetable soup, salmon and mashed potatoes with yet another Pisco Sour, wine, tea and a lovely dessert called ‘Kuchen’’ – a traditional German thick custard like pie with blueberries – yum. On the way back to the ship we stopped in Puerto Varas and listened to some lovely music in the park with pan flutes, a guitar and a piccolo type instrument which the fellow played incredibly fast.

One last sea day and the end of the cruise as we docked in San Antonio, Chile.  Didn’t realize that we were 1-½ hours from the Santiago airport – but great bus service, so got there easily.  Had lots of time before our flight, so no worries.  Am presently writing from Mexico City – again, lots of time so no worries with the line-ups at immigration.  Will be at Joel’s tonight and home late on Saturday.

Love to all,
Laurel and Dale
