Alaskan Cruise

Our adventure started in Anchorage.  The ship was 1.5 hours from the airport, so we took a tour that included a wild life refuge.  Moose, bears, porcupines, caribou, reindeer, fox etc.  It was a beautiful park with rangers giving talks - could have used way more time there.

Then on to the Island Princess in Whittier, lunch and a quick walk around the 'town' (basically a marina with lots of tourist shops).  Most of the residents live in an apartment block with a few stores and a post office on the main floor.

The Hubbard Glacier was our first stop.  It is one of only 8 that is still growing.

Glacier Bay National Park was exciting - we watched a chunk of ice calve that was probably the size of a house.  We also got to watch humpback whales diving and frolicking as we motored along.

In Skagway we floated down the Tayia River - very picturesque and peaceful.

Afterwards we walked through town to the old cemetery and hiked up to the falls.

In Juneau our tour stopped at the Mendenhall Glacier and we hiked to the falls there too.

Afterwards, we went on a whale watching expedition and were extremely lucky to follow a humpback whale as it was 'logging' before it arched up and dove down giving us a tremendous view of its flukes.  Then several Dalls porpoises swam alongside our boat playing in the waves - very exciting!  We also had a pod of five Orcas dipping and diving around us.  All in all a very successful outing.

Our next stop was Ketchikan.  Here we got a little more adventurous and went Zip-lining!

Then visited the town and went to a Lumberjack
Show!  Very exciting!

Of course, every evening on the ship were spectacular shows and performances.  With that and the wonderful dinners (and desserts), it was great fun.  And we met lots of lovely people.

And now - back to reality!
